This Dance

Across the shadows time pervades,
oe’r the chasms challenge,
against the wind and rocky glade,
and of the times’ bleak balance –
‘Tis soulful love endures the test,
‘tis two in love as one,
‘tis what we have that makes us best
to find us here in lea’s sweet sun.

Where now, today, tomorrow, bliss!
Just stuff of dreams our yesterday,
together upon a loving kiss
we stand in strength to stay.

No bribe to crossing shall we pay,
no altered step here showing.
Our strength is with each other’s stride
and all we hold is knowing
that ours is not a love of dust,
nor a temporal happenstance.
Ours is bound in deepest trust
that brings eternal music’s dance –

One Eyed Bessy

One eyed Bessy
wore a parka in July,
people in the city park
would pause to wonder why.

Her one footed lover
kept a three legged dog,
and upon a unicycle rode
each morning through the sea shore’s fog,

With one huarache sandal,
bermuda shorts and white tank top,
he’d ride with Bessy everyday
through the park to only stop
to wait for Stubs the dog to lift
his missing leg to pee,
then off again they’d serpentine,
laughing on their way to see
the California sea lions
upon the beach in summer’s heat,
where they’d join the barking chorus
and sing out loud in happy beat.

Their special treat was ice cream,
when pennies found were counted spare,
that on the pier they’d pleasure day,
to sit and talk without a care.

Theirs is but a story
about the strength to rise above,
that they in jigsaw pieces found
life’s laughter and the truth of love.

Where Were You?

a poet’s epitaph to his muse

Where were you when silence fell
across the vale of season’s sunlit spring,
as hush of thrush was heard no more,
no life left burgeoning?

Where were you when “timeless” caught
its final thought to treasure and to hold,
and stood the wood in echoed ring,
still and haunting, cold?

Where were you when seaside crash
returned its thrash to waves left in the calm,
as foam and loam receded, quiet,
reducing shore to balm?

Where were you when down this path
my foot stepped lath was left to aging dust,
as rhyme and time reclaimed from me
and laid my words to trust?

Where were you when final breath
drawn just at death, was given back to earth,
released in peace to wander home,
rejoicing in new birth?

Where were you? There by my side
and could not hide as sorrow came to you.
My love, above this moment know
that I will always love you!

Where were you when Palm of love
returned His dove to grace your window sill?
With me! With me! And longing heart
for I am with you still!

Poet’s Muse

Long road spent between these pages,
life and worries, true love and rages
that fill the vacant lines with scenes,
reality based or wakening dreams…

‘Tis still the stuff of spirit’s life
when to this human form is shaped,
blessing’s miles, confounded strife,
be hero kind or villain caped.

For India in thanks and bows,
to fill the blotter with blackened tonic,
that by the quill and madman’s dreaming
twist the common to most ironic.

But bliss is this sweet expression lain,
when to myself and God explain
the content, part and parcel thought
and so by dreams in verse are wrought.

Be thankful, lazy wandering poet,
for published yes or naught, will know it
when days have waned to breaths in counting,
waiting for the last breath’s mounting,
that life fulfills this spirit’s dreams,
draws lessons from the daily scenes
of family, son’s and daughter’s trials,
to be charmed by quill and ink in vials.

So to the passerby may seem,
revelation in genius, or madman’s scheme.
Be heart at pouring tear and love,
be politically driven, remove the gloves
and belch and scream of disrepair…

But neither one, nor all of these,
enchants this poet or dress’ to please
as much as what his muse can bring,
when by her love and kiss doth spring
his heart and soul in flesh and care…
my pen and ink, words on lines –
belong to her – from her – I swear!

Afternoons

A lascivious smile my spring love moons,
when moments quiet the afternoons.
In shadowed loft where time grows still,
my love and I, unleashed, do fill
the hours with desire.

A simple touch, a hand that lingers,
a wanton look and taste of fingers,
the kindling of this fire.

The gentle pheromone rush that shames
the candle to her dancing flame,
draws shadows twisted, entangled, one,
as hair and sweat and flesh do sum
this room removed from late-day light.
Two bodies one, to souls in flight
to where the ether flies above,
to dance in spiritual locks of love.

Flesh dissolved to earthly means
as hands and fingers push the seams
away –
till passion’s kiss will only stay
to bind us to this earth,
all else is gone and so immersed
our conscience rises from the rest
to explode in heaven’s light as blessed!

Such passion wages war with time,
halts the moment’s temporal rhyme,
holds each note in measure long,
then synch’s in downbeat’s heartfelt song!

Wrestling, grasping, scent and flesh,
tangled, holding, till nothing’s left
but two in melting washed repose,
heart beats pounding in ecstasy’s throes.

Then slowly day resolves the room
and brings the peace of afternoon,
reflects a sparkled glimmer kept
in eyes of love and teardrop wept.

For two whose souls belong as one,
in passion’s love can call the sum
of all their hearts can feel –
but only in the lays of soul
can love’s sweet truth acknowledge full
the depth of what is real.

Eternal Walls I’ll Climb

In ancient times I’ve held you,
I’ve traveled far, upon the sea or over fields of green,
to return to you from conquests vast,
as viking, knight, and warrior seen.

I’ve traveled through millennia
to right the wrongs of an endless love,
that’s been tragic, lost, removed too young,
yet no distance quells this love.

Neither time, nor earthly displacement
can conquer this kindling fire,
for ours, the very words were written
of a passion and desire
that others mimic Shakespearean,
or prose there crafted on a moonlit night,
for ours, the fabric through all time
to lovers lost or tragic, have bathed in such a light!

Our story lived throughout our lives,
in every historic setting,
has found us here, in each other’s arms,
without a thought’s regretting,
for our story must be told!

For you my love eternal,
eternal walls I’ll climb,
to find you and to love you,
this love is ours, sublime!

Eternally yours…

Afton’s Ashes

Ashes strewn by wind and weather,
from funeral pyre ‘cross hills of heather,
last mount be mine upon these rocks,
reduced to only watch my flocks
from this distant lonely brae.

Yet with the breeze, freer to roam
in ashen form, to seaside loam,
o’er lea and rill, through scented birch,
across the lane and round the church
where once they laid my body down.

Six carried me up to this mount
while bagpipes played and left the count
of clock just set past three.

And tho’ my brothers kept her home,
my Mary cried, “He’ll not go alone!
for I am wed to thee!”

The cairns along the path and rill
grew that day and stand there still,
holding place to honor me.

Then as my bones laid top that perch,
the piping waned to silenced search
of tolling church bells’ ring…
and so through sobs did Mary sing.

In gentle touch of fire’s life,
while softly sang my precious wife,
the pyre rose to carry me.

So raised in silken smoky spire,
I looked long the dell below this pyre
in sadness, I was free.

Yet gently gathered on the ground,
my earthly bonds there flitted ‘round
to touch my Mary’s face.

That through her tears and gentle song
I knew my soul would keep as long
as Mary graced this place.

Today my flocks still grace the lea
where by sweet Afton my Mary and me
found love among the winding rills.

Our birch shade kept for holding hands,
ties heart to hers and with this land
our destiny yet to fill.

So I now sing in low remorse,
echoes ‘cross this hill and course
of gentle rills that grace her sleep.

That when she’s done and joins the mount,
her ashen beauty mixed in the count
of what our histories’ keep –
Then o’er brae and lea we’ll sleep
The again we’ll love so deep.

I Love You Everywhere

With you, my love, my world’s complete
when in my arms you rest your head
upon my shoulder, your fragrant hair against my cheek,
through moments where love’s need not said,
but experienced in this blissful touch,
where hearts beat close and hands speak much
of the tenderness I desire for you.

And as I hold you close and quiet,
I know I’ll love you for all time,
for you have quelled the senseless riot,
that in my heart once held me blind
to the truth of such sweet love.

Protect and hold you, I always will,
in quiet peace or noisy day,
for you, my heart does always thrill
to sense your touch or hear you say,
“I love you”.

With you I’ll spend eternity,
that I may hold you close, and feel
the sweetness of our love’s deep truth,
and through all time let our hearts reel
in what this love with us will share.
It’s you I love with all I am,
and you I do love everywhere.

The One Less Traveled By

Here, within this yellow wood,
my road, the one less traveled by,
has seen a life where love has stood
in shadowed forest and by my side,
has sparkled deep, through shade of tree
and cast a smile in front of me.

At times the path was lonely,
where darkness seemed to lend
a fear to the ‘morrow’s waking,
yet, at times it came as friend,
whose shadow cooled, bestowed a trust,
where comfort’s found in deep wood’s musk.

Tho’ this journey’s tried my spirit,
the deepest love of life I’ve gained,
as every trial’s eventual end
rewards with cooling summer’s rain,
thereby my very senses thrilled,
these histories’ pages, sweetly filled.

Today, this road has risen high
to alpine glen and meadow,
where seasons rich and heaven’s nigh
bring peace of knowing, mellow
thoughts, for fears once lessons taught,
thus grant a strength of spirit true,
life’s diploma, herein wrought.

Tomorrow, then, in alpine glen,
my love will so abound,
to kiss, in bliss, my muse’s lips,
in love we both have found,
hand in hand, our past departing,
for today, our journey’s only starting.

 (inspired by Robert Frost)
